Indigenous Health Navigator
The Indigenous Health Navigator provides support to Indigenous people in navigating the healthcare system and other health services. The Indigenous Health Navigator helps to ensure people are supported and safe while accessing health services such as hospital appointments, prescription services, mental health services, just to name a few.
The Indigenous Health Navigator supports folks through various ways, including but not limited to:
Advocating on behalf of clients
Attending appointments with clients
Supporting in reporting concerns related to health care services and access
Connecting with health departments and services
Collaborating with like-minded organizations to identify gaps and meet the needs of clients
Accessing funding for medical expenses
Providing information on common health issues and experiences
Hosting lunch and learns on relevant health and wellness related topics
Providing liaison services between Indigenous communities and health authorities to ensure Indigenous ways and practices are being followed in the healthcare system
The Indigenous Health Navigator has a small inventory of playpens, strollers, and carseats to support folks who are travelling to Happy Valley-Goose Bay for medical and are staying at Gary B's Medical Hostel.

The Indigenous Health Navigator also takes a lead role in researching and identifying pertinent training opportunities such as harm reduction, mental health first aid, and naloxone training for Labrador Friendship Centre staff to participate in to ensure we are all equipped to provide support if needed.
