What is HIV/Aids?
AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It is caused by the human immune deficiency virus (HIV), which attacks and weakens the body's immune system. HIV prevents the body from fighting infection, leaving it vulnerable to a number of diseases. Anyone can contract HIV/AIDS, no matter their race, age, gender, or sexual orientation.
In recent years, a number of drugs have been developed to fight both HIV and the infections that accompany it. Current therapies typically involve taking a combination of these drugs. Among the new treatments are drugs that help to slow the replication of the virus and delay the onset of opportunistic infections. When HIV/AIDS first surfaced, few treatments were available - today, HIV infected people who are diagnosed early are leading longer, healthier lives.
There is, however, still no cure for HIV/AIDS. Your best defence is to know the facts about HIV and to be aware of behaviours that may put you at risk for becoming infected.
